Target Buyers Not Visitors
When thinking about your keyword rankings and getting traffic to your site you need to think about the types of keywords you are working on. If you are in any kind of competitive niche you want to start with “long tailed keywords” which are those phrases that usually contain four or more words. While these key phrases get less searches than the one or two word keywords they are usually easier to get to the top of the rankings and in a lot of cases they are more targeted towards your product or site.
You especially want to try and find the search phrases that people who are actually looking to spend money enter in during their search. Think about which person is more likely to pull out their wallet and buy, the person who enters in “car insurance” or the one who searches for “cheap car insurance in mississippi? Of course there are a lot more searches for “car insurance” but your chances of getting the top ranking for that is slim to none and a lot of the searches for that term may not do you any good but if you get to the top of the rankings for “cheap car insurance in mississippi” chances are that all the people doing that search are buyers.
Look for these buying phrases in your niche and dedicate a page to each of them. Even if a phrase has only50-100 searches a month that is fine if there is little competition for it. If you put together a list of 10 or 15 of these purchasing keywords that you can get your site ranked at the top then you have managed to get 1000 buyers to your site each month. Not visitors but buyers and if you convert at just 1% then you have just made 10 sales a month for very little work.
